Horticulturist, Writer, and Traveler .
Welcome back. I can't think of anything better than sharing my love of plants and gardening with you. I hope you will join me in this adventure, from sharing stories to discovering the newest in plants for the garden, to traveling to the Great Gardens of the World.
If you are a beginning gardener, I'll hold your hand; if you are a curious gardener, I'll try to satisfy the curiosity; if you are a passionate gardener, you will be sated.
And for all my colleagues in the horticulture trade - growers, breeders, brokers, landscapers and retailers - stay tuned for recommendations you can use to make your job easier.
Feel free to browse the entire site, find out about the newest plants and events at the Trial Gardens at UGA, take an online course, come visit me in beautiful Athens, or join me on travels around the globe.
I too love travel and would be pleased to speak to your group. If you are interested in having me lecture or provide a walk-about, you can find more information here.
BIG News: 2013
1. The Greatest Perennial Course on Earth! - ok, perhaps a little over the top, but my first Internet Course for gardeners and landscapers came on line a few months ago. Perennials for the Sun features 20 genera. oral presentation, photos, videos and yes, tests on each one. A section on Nomenclature and Taxonomy is also included. For those who always wanted to learn more but did not have the opportunity, no more excuses. Do it soon for extraordinary savings. Click here for more information.
2. An App - Armitage's Greatest Perennials & Annuals -
Update - The App is now launched!! It is available on all Android and iPhones and tablets. You will love it, although with the creative title of "Armitage's Greatest Perennials and Annuals" and the outrageous price of $4.99, you may hesitate a while.
However, don't tarry - you have a mini-book at your fingertips, with great plants, videos, photos and "pithy" information. If you like it, let others know on Facebook, etc, if you don't like it, well, sorry. But I am excited, hope you are too.
Update on the App: Apr 24, 2013: The number one question I receive when I talk about plants is "Do the deer like them?" I have now addressed that question in the App by providing a Deer Browsing rating, 5 = filet mignon, 1= they don't touch.
Hope it helps in making plant decsiaions.

A few of our favorite things. We all have "things" we must have in the garden, perhaps a special hoe or a comfortable pair of gloves. Click here to see a few of mine and write me to share your favorite thing. I will include as many as I can on the site.

Travels with Dr Armitage. Every year I take about 25 people to Great Gardens somewhere in the world. Garden Vistas is my small travel company and together we have been on spectacular trips to Japan, Canada, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Australia, Wales, France and ... well, we never seem to run out of places to see. We would love to have you join us. The only rule is that you must love plants and gardens more than shopping.
In June, 2013, we travel to the Great Gardens of the Channel Islands, while in September, Adrian Bloom and I are starting a new school, The Bressingham Academy of Advanced Garden Studies at Bressingham Gardens in the UK. The school is designed for gardeners and professionals who wish to learn more and do so in an exrtraordinary setting. For more information, click here.

Dancing With The Stars - still here by popular demand.
I haven't danced "competitively" for a couple years but my foray into dancing
continues to be a popular joke with my horticulture compatriots. It just never seems to go away, but if you have fun viewing "Allan Travolta", heck, I have fun sharing. Click here for a good time.

Dr A. honored with a tree dedication:
The Dawes Arboretum in Newark, OH recently dedicated a Southern Magnolia to Dr Armitage for his teaching, research and outreach achievments in horticulture.
Dr Armitage joins other notables such as Orville Wright, Jesse Owens, John Glenn and Jack Hannah.

Books
I have published 13 books. All can be found by clicking here and can even be purchased (feel free to do so). The latest (2011) is the 2nd edition of Armitage's Garden Perennials, but many others are still very popular.
The best news is that the classic Herbaceous Perennial Plants, 3rd ed., the "bible" of perennials is now available on iPad, iPhone, Nook and Kindle through Cool Springs Press.

The Grand Lady and I
It must have been a slow day for her, but when I was invited to share some time with Martha Stewart, it took me a millisecond to say yes. We had a grand time, enjoy the show.
